By August of 1998 he had built a nice record of 12-3, and traveled to Anaheim, California to challenge Panama's Mauricio Martinez (11-3-1) for the vacant NABO Bantamweight Championship. Badillo was stopped in the 10th round.
As it turned out, the fight against Martinez would be his only shot at a title belt. He became known as a "tester" who was solid, and good enough to test any up-and-coming prospects. His record is filled with some very good names including: Carlos Navarro, Gerardo Martinez, David Toledo (twice), Agapito Sanchez, Frankie Archuleta, Daniel Seda, Willie Jorrin, Pedro Pena, Marcos Licona, Steve Luevano, Daniel Ponce De Leon, Nestor Rocha (twice), Cornelius Lock, and Gabe Elizondo to name a few. It seems you weren't "official" until you squared off with "El Rojo" Badillo!
Marcos fought his last pro bout as a Jr.
Lightweight in May of 2009. Being stopped in round 7 by Jose Luis Tula (15-12-2).
Marcos won 15 of his first 18 bouts. He ended his pro boxing career with a record of 18-38-1, 7 ko's.
